Germany vs Serbia Highlights

Germany 0 - Serbia 1 (World cup 2010) Ahead of the Nationalmannschaft’s second match against Serbia midfielders Thomas Mueller and Sami Khedira both urged caution against Germans getting too carried away after the hammering of Australia. The three-time World Cup winners however started the match brightly, Lukas Podolski flashing a shot just wide early on. Things then turned bitty as a spate of yellow cards were branded, Serb defender Branislav Ivanovic picking up his booking for a tackle from behind on Podolski. Germany also found themselves in the book, captain Philipp Lahm, Miroslav Klose and Sami Khedira all getting in trouble. With the ref struggling to keep control of the bookings, Miroslav Klose got himself sent off in the 37th for a nonsense second booking on Stankovic. But that was only the beginning of the madness as within a minute Serbia scored through new Liverpool signing Milan Jovanovic from Zigic’s knock-down in the 6-yard box. Germany almost levelled before the break but Sami Khedira’s shot rebounded off the bar. Early in the second half Podolski missed after a stunning through ball from Ozil. On the hour Lukas Podolski had a great chance to level from the penalty spot, after Vidic had handled, but Stojkovic saved a poor effort. Serbia also threatened with Zigic heading against the bar from a Krasic cross.

The national anthems were notable as “The People’s Rooney,” Jong Tae Se, was in floods of tears. Brazil dominated the early stages against mystery side North Korea, Elano tried with an effort from distance that failed to trouble the keeper. Ten minutes after the break, after Brazil had clearly upped their game, Elano released Maicon and the Inter Milan right back slammed a shot in at the near post from an impossible angle past a stunned Myong-Guk Ri. On 72 minutes Brazil doubled their lead with Elano turning from provider to goal scorer thanks to a fine slide-rule finish after a great through ball from Robinho. With a minute remaining the plucky North Koreans pulled a goal back, Yun-Nam Ji drove into the box and beat Julio Cesar down the middle.

Didier Drogba started on the bench for the Ivory Coast and Portugal had the better of the early exchanges. Didier Zokora was booked for an early foul on Ronaldo and then the Real Madrid forward smacked a terrific long range effort against the post. Midway through the half Demel and Ronaldo got in a little spat of handbags and both got booking in the process. The second half was hugely disappointing with neither side fashioning too many clear cut chances, sub Didier Drogba missed a decent opportunity to make himself a 91st minute hero when he crossed instead of shooting when freed in the box.

The Azzurri levelled just after the hour mark with their own set-play goal, Simone Pepe’s corner was totally missed by keeper Villar and Daniele De Rossi was on hand to slide in the equaliser.

Argentina vs Nigeria World Cup Highlights

All eyes at Ellis Park were fixed on Diego Maradona ahead of the kick-off as the Argentina boss marched over the the South American press corp to give a pre-match interview and announce his team in person. When the match kicked off Argentina were all guns blazing, and it took just six minutes for the South Americans to open when Veron’s corner was converted by Gabriel Heinze’s bullet diving header. Leo Messi tried to add to the score with a curling left-footed effort towards the top corner but a fingertip save from the excellent Vincent Enyeama denied Argentina’s shining-light. Argentina lost much of their fluency after the break, Lukman Haruna working hard as the midfield enforcer before getting booked for a tackle on Messi while Maradona was forced to swap ineffective striker Higuain for Diego Milito as he looked for a comforting second goal.

Korea Republic vs Greece World Cup Highlights

"The next game is always the most important." Coaches and footballers alike have been using this old adage to emphasise their focus on an upcoming match for decades. At the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, the phrase "the first game is the most important" is arguably more appropriate for the likes of Korea Republic and Greece, who go head to head on Saturday.

Considering the strength of the other two teams in Group B, Argentina and Nigeria, this clash could well prove decisive. La Albiceleste are undoubted group favourites, while the other three will all feel they are capable of claiming second spot and a place in the last 16.

The French had an early chance to take the lead against Uruguay when Ribery rode his luck to race down the left, he crossed to Sidney Govou in the box but the Lyon forward failed to commit to the goal-scoring opportunity and the ball ran wide. France picked up two quick-fire yellow cards as Patrice Evra and Franck Ribery were both cautioned. The bookings kept coming after the break as Uruguay’s Victorino entered the ref’s notebook, while Jeremy Toulalan got himself carded for a dirty challenge for Les Bleus. Eventually a red card was branded, 10 minutes from time Uruguay substitute Nicolas Lodeiro picked up a second yellow for an awful foul that took out Sagna on his ankle.

South Africa 1 - 1 Mexico World Cup

South Africa were lucky to escape an early scare inside the opening five minutes of the World Cup as Giovani Dos Santos narrowly fired wide in Mexico’s first attack. The moment of the half arrived in the 37th minute, a Mexican corner was flicked on by Franco to the far post where Carlos Vela touched the ball over the line only for the linesman to chalk the goal off for a touch-and-go offside decision. Nine minutes into the second half and South Africa erupted, a superb pass pierced the Mexican backline to free Siphiwe Tshabalala and the dreadlocked midfielder cracked home a left-footed beauty into the top right corner. The Mexicans, who looked poor after conceding, managed to level in the 78th minute when the Bafana defence went missing from a left wing cross, allowing Rafa Marquez the freedom of the six-yard box and he lashed home the equaliser. Bafana Bafana could have snatched an injury time winner but Katlego Mphela could only strike against the foot of the post from 7-yards

After announcing Luis Nani’s injury ruling the Manchester United forward out of the World Cup, Portugal laboured in the first half against Mozambique as Simao and Liedson both went close for the Europeans while Mozambique came closest when Momed Hagi cracked a shot against the post. Six minutes after the restart Portugal struck, Deco threaded a defence-splitting pass that combined with Danny’s incisive burst from midfield and the Zenit playmaker rounded the keeper to score. Carlos Queiroz’s Selecao doubled their lead 15 minutes from time when Bremen’s Hugo Almeida finished off a pacey attack after being teed up by Danny. And the fourth was quick in coming, Cesc Fabregas collected a slick pass in the box and fire a shot home on the turn.
