The Netherlands dominated possession in the early stages of the match, Dirk Kuyt tested Sorensen in the opening ten minutes. At the end of the half Van Persie fired wide. Seconds into the second half Robin van Persie burst into the box and eventually crossed to the back stick where Danish defender Simon Poulsen inexplicably headed into his own net thanks to a slight deflection off Agger. With five minutes to go the impressive substitute Eljero Elia was played in by Sneijder and after the Hamburg winger had hit the post Dirk Kuyt tapped into an empty net.
